She an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science (AAS) from Cazenovia, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) from Virginia Intermont. After college, Kathy began working as a professional trainer, riding instructor, and barn manager at Westbridge stables in Austin, TX where she taught all the upper level students.
Two years later, she was asked to return to Virginia Intermont to join the teaching staff where Kathy taught Intermediate level riding classes, Farrier Science and Nutrition lecture classes, Teaching Theory and Course Design. She was the Intercollegiate Team Coach and took students to local horse shows where they excelled in the Hunters and Equitation. During this time, Kathy herself also started seriously competing in the Jumper divisions.
Two years later, she moved to St. Louis, Missouri, became the Assistant Trainer for two different, highly respected trainers. Rode clients’ horses at home and at shows, ran the school-horse lesson program, gave instruction to the boarders, and started traveling to some of the best horse shows in the country. Eventually moved back to Austin, and started own business, Starpoint Equestrian Enterprises, (dba 1994), and established a very successful show barn at Cross Creek Farm. Riders dominated the Central Texas H/J shows, received numerous high-point awards at the year-end banquets, and also competed successfully at “A” shows.
Kathy ultimately moved to Plano in 2000 to start a family. Has two boys, Daniel, 12 and Jacob, 10. Her husband Kevin is very supportive of “Horse Time” away from home. After starting a family, Kathy shifted gears and began teaching part-time to so her family could take priority. During this time, she began branching out to include Public Speaking, crafting custom Ribbon Belts, writing a book, and developing a fun and fitness class geared toward riders!
Friday, 8/22 afternoon/evening: All the Ride Moves Body Awareness Workshop (1 hour)
This is a body awareness workshop inspired by "Nia", a combination of Tai Chi, Alexander Technique and Felendrais Method. In this workshop we will use musical rhythms to simulate the gaits of the horse. We'll learn techniques that will identify core flexibility, leg strength, body alignment and symmetry. These techniques will also be used to identify our individual trouble spots. We'll take what we learn and apply them to our riding on Saturday and Sunday.
We'll use musical rhythms to simulate the gaits of the horse: Walk = 4 beats, Trot = 2 beats, and Canter = waltz! To quote Kathy, "Dance and laugh while duplicating movements needed for better riding and make your body stronger on OR off the horse! The session begins seated, and later uses the chair to support overall posture, improve body stability, and develop a better hand/arm position for correct contact to the bit."
Saturday, 8/23: Riding
During this session, we'll take what we learned in our Friday All The Ride Moves Body Awareness Workshop and apply it to our riding. The goal is to make corrections in our bodies to allow for a more accurate and balanced show jumping round.
Sunday, 8/24: Riding
